Old First Quarters

This spot is so secret that many of our locals probably don’t even know about it. It’s part of over 293,000 acres of land in various regions of Tennessee and Alabama, managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), to protect unique ecological or historical features and to provide opportunities for low-impact recreation.
Known as TVA Natural Areas, these spots are open to the public and home to the most scenic and ecologically significant resources of the Tennessee Valley. And one of them, called Old First Quarters Small Wild Area, is only a short drive from Wilson Lake.
This 25-acre wildlife area was named after the complex that housed engineers during the construction of the dam and is dedicated to preserving the structures of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), wildflowers, and bird habitat.
